Last week, the U.S. federal government also launched its website to sign up for free Covid-19 tests, allowing the general public to order a maximum of four tests shipped directly to their household with kits being shipped at the end of January.

Health researchers and Coronavirus experts have indicated that at-home rapid tests work by detecting antigens, which are proteins that live on the surface of the virus. Antigen tests are sensitive and vary depending on the amount of virus within one person. In the end, a person needs to produce a higher number of antigens to produce a positive result in a rapid test. While the US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, believes that a nationwide Omicron peak is still likely weeks away from surging, the demand for at-home rapid antigen tests continues to increase.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that stocking up on at-home rapid kits to test for COVID-19 is a necessity for households just as facemasks and other PPE items were when the pandemic first began.
