Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use a rapid antigen test?

The rapid antigen test swab only has to be inserted into the lower nasal cavity, collection of the sample is relatively simple and comfortable. All necessary materials are included within the Covid-19 Antigen Testing kits. Testing is quick and straight forward and you can get results from 10 minutes.

All tests are for a single use only. This means you can only sue each test once. Do not use a test more than once or try to use one test on multiple people.

When should I use a rapid antigen self-test?

  • You can use a rapid antigen test if you have symptoms of COVID-19. Rapid antigen self-tests can be used to test both adults and children. Try our coronavirus symptom checker online.

  • Before attending a gathering with people in crowded indoor or outdoor places e.g. family gatherings, weddings, funerals and night clubs.

  • Before going to a high risk setting e.g. aged care, hospital

  • Returning from a place with a high number of COVID-19 cases.

How do I store and dispose of rapid antigen tests?

Store the test kit in a safe, dry, cool place. Refer to the test kit instructions.

Disposal will vary according to information provided with the test instructions. Some tests come with a plastic bag to place the contents of the test into (including the swab).

This bag is then placed into another bag for disposal with household rubbish. Test kit materials are not recyclable.

If no bags are provided then you can place the used items from the test into a small plastic bag that can be sealed. This bag should be put into another bag that can be sealed and disposed of in rubbish.

Wash your hands carefully after completing the test and disposing of the test kit contents.

Are rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 accurate?

Rapid antigen tests are effective if used over multiple days, and are considered to be effective at detecting cases that are likely to be infectious. They do not replace a PCR test. A PCR test is still the most accurate and reliable test to detect and diagnose COVID-19.

How long does it take for symptoms of the coronavirus disease to appear?

On average it takes 5-6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days.
